Home United Clinches Women’s National Basketball Championship 2012!

Siglap Basketball Club 76 – 63 Singapore Min Chong Sports Club In the lead-up to the Finals of the Women’s National Basketball Championship (WNBC) 2012, Siglap Basketball Club and Singapore Min Chong Sports Club faced off for third placing. Siglap rode the hot shooting of Violet Chua to a 36-19 halftime lead. However, some intense pressure defense from Min Chong after the break caused problems for Siglap, with lead guard Cheung Ka Lai playing a particularly important role as the lead dwindled down to single digits. In the end however, the backcourt combo of Violet and Shermaine See was simply too much for Min Chong to handle as Siglap clinched the final podium spot with a 15-point victory.   Home United Basketball Club 76 – 58 Qian Xi Basketball Club

In the grand finale of WNBC 2012, juggernauts Home United Basketball Club and Qian Xi Basketball Club matched up against each other for the title spot, but it was Qian Xi who seized the lead from the get-go, as Koh Wei Bin led her team with an array of advanced moves and her aggressive defense. Her aggression eventually proved to be her undoing, however, as a series of quick fouls landed her on the bench, as Home United’s Yao Xiuxiu proceeded to take over the game with a series of drives to the basket, drawing foul after foul from her hapless defenders. Home United managed to eke out a slender 35-32 lead at the half. In the second half, Home United suffered a scare as their mercurial star guard Cheryl Poon went down with an injury. Qian Xi capitalised on Home United’s misfortune as the cat-quick Tok Hui Min kept her side close with unrelenting forays to the hoop. Home United managed to hang on, and upon Cheryl’s return, the result was in little doubt as she lit up the Singapore Basketball Centre with some impressive play, ultimately securing an 18-point win and the WNBC 2012 title for her team.   Congratulations to all the winners of the Women’s National Basketball Championship 2012!
