KBL Under suspicion of match-fixing

The Korean Basketball League is being investigated by the city of Daegu prosecutors for possible improprieties following the outbreak of a number of match fixing scandals that has hit the Korean sports scene. Prosecutors in Daegu, who are investigating a snowballing match-fixing scandal in the top pro volleyball league in the country, have expanded their probe into the nation's baseball and basketball leagues. The scandal was brought to light with the arrest of a Korean gambling broker who has admitted to influencing players during his testimony, possibly including KBL players as well. Volleyball was the second sport to succumb to the scandal, after the Korean Football Association was hit last year. In both sports, the majority of the players indicted played for Sangmu teams, which are professional players who are fulfilling their active military service, however others, including national team members, were also involved. There are no military teams in the KBL, however. The KBL has reacted with surprise, and according to the Korea Times, an official with the KBL said he was not aware of any match fixing from the hardwood, and also said the league is holding seminars for all players to better education them about pitfalls of match fixing. The Ministry of Culture has since strengthened penalties for illegal gambling, and will take tough measures to root out corruption in the major sports leagues in the country. Via (AsiaBasket)
