Thailand Slammers Ends Singapore Slingers’ Winning Streak

Slingers drew first blood from a basket by Louis Graham and takes an early 6-1 lead. Baskets by Kenneth Walker sandwiching a dunk from Deandre Thomas found the defending champions tied at 8 with the visiting Singapore Slingers with only three minutes left on the clock in the first quarter. The quarter ends with both teams tied at 10 points. The Slingers again took the lead first in the second quarter from a field goal by Louis Graham but back to back baskets by the Deandre Thomas saw the Slammers once again stealing the lead. Woeful shooting by the Slingers in the first half of the game, completing only 26% of their field goal attempts compared to the Slammers’ 33%. Both teams not converting at all from the 3 point line, only two 3 pointers were completed out of 16 attempts. The first half ends with the Slammers up 25 to 21. A very close game followed in the third quarter with both teams trading points and while the Slammers maintained their lead throughout, the point difference betwen the two teams never went above four points. The Slingers improved their shooting in this quarter, increasing their field goal percentage to 36%. Fine shooting by Vaughn Canta in the third sees the Slingers going into the final quarter trailing by only three points at 40 to the Slammers 43. It was make it or break it time for both teams with only three points separating them in the final ten minutes. Back to back baskets by Don Dulay and Louis Graham saw the Slingers take the lead for the first time in the game with just under five minutes left on the clock. Not wanting to take it lying down Chester Tolomia put in a three pointer to give the Slammers back a one point lead with just a little over a minute left to play. Important blocks by Donald Little and Louis Graham in the last ten seconds pushes this game into overtime. The fourth quarter ends with a 51 all tie. This nail biter of a game continued in intensity as the Slammers try to put a bit of a distance between them and the Slingers. Vaughn Canta sinks a three pointer with two and a half minutes remaining on the clock to give the Slingers back their lead but a three point play by Deandre Thomas puts the Slammers back up just a minute later. This seemed to fire the Slammers up and Kenneth Walker sinks another two points to increase the Slammers lead. Slingers were just not able to find the basket at this point and the final scoreboard read 66 to 56 for the Slammers. The Chang Thailand Slammers will travel to the MABA Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to meet the Westports Malaysia Dragons on Saturday the 11th of February 2012.
